HERE builds a
community that nurtures career artists as they create innovative hybrid live
performance in theatre, dance, music, puppetry, media and visual art. Our
artist residencies support the singular vision of the lead artist through
commissions, long-term development, and production support. HERE’s programs and
performances promote relationships among local, national, and international
artists. Our space is a destination for audiences who are passionate about
ground-breaking contemporary work and the creative process behind it.
HERE has been one of New York’s most prolific producing and presenting
organizations, and today, it stands at the forefront of the city’s presenters
of daring new hybrid art. Opera-theatre and music-theatre have long been part
of HERE's programming. In January 2013, HERE launched PROTOTYPE:
Opera/Theatre/Now, an annual festival of contemporary opera-theatre and
music-theatre co-produced by Beth Morrison Projects and HERE that
showcases an exciting new generation of composers and their collaborators.
PROTOTYPE engages local, national, and international audiences that share a
commitment to adventurous contemporary work. Inaugurated with critical success
and popular acclaim, each PROTOTYPE festival includes one world premiere, two
full-scale presentations (one by a New York or national artist, and one by an
international artist), a multi-media concert, a concert reading of a work in
development, and two panel discussions that engage the public in the topic of
the development of opera.
