Regina Opera’s mission is twofold:
- To bring great opera performances at reasonable prices to Brooklyn neighborhoods.
- To provide a showcase for singers to perform the standard operatic repertoire, primarily in the original language with English supertitles, in fully-staged productions with orchestra.
Each season, Regina Opera performs three fully-staged opera productions with orchestra and English supertitles; five Sunday matinee concerts; and frequent free performances at public libraries, community events, and other venues around Brooklyn.
Founded in 1970, Regina Opera began as a small group of dedicated singers who gave opera recitals, with piano accompaniment, at a Catholic youth center in Borough Park, Brooklyn. A few years later, we began performing on the larger stage of the parish school, and we acquired an orchestra in 1982. In 2008, a grant enabled us to begin providing supertitles. And in 2012, we moved to a wonderful new home in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Academy auditorium, whose more professional stage facilities and comfortable audience amenities inaugurated a great new era in Regina Opera’s history.
